After 40 years of driving trucks, Jose Arnaud said he can handle the amount of traffic on I-10.

It’s the drivers he has a problem with.

“They don’t have compassion for us. They want to keep moving fast. We’re hauling 40 tons. It’s hard to move fast,” Arnaud said.

The Maricopa Association of Governments announced a number of projects slated to start in the next couple of years.

One of them is the construction of State Route 30, a new three-lane freeway running both east and west between the Loop 303 and Interstate 17, south of Interstate 10.

It won’t happen fast, though.

“It’s always challenging to keep up with the growth we have here. How many years in a row were we the fastest-growing county in the U.S.? Certainly, that’s a challenge,” said Maricopa Association of Governments Assistant Executive Director John Bullen.

That growth is especially evident in Buckeye.

“Just from a commuting perspective, getting back and forth to metro Phoenix, that’s a massive opportunity for the entire west, providing that reliever for I-10 and lessening the traffic impact,” said Buckeye Mayor Eric Orsborn.

And from a business perspective, Orsborn said there will be new economic opportunities.

“It also opens up areas of development for us especially along our historic downtown area,” Orsborn said.

There are three phases, and the first portion of SR 30 to be constructed is the center segment, between the South Mountain Freeway and Loop 303.
